How do Brigit and Reidar’s stories illustrate the idea that God is at work long before we recognize Him?

Faith Focus: Have you ever looked back on a chaotic season of your life and seen God’s hand in it afterward? How did it change your perspective?

Reidar is intent on taking Brigit home, but the story suggests that our true home is not of this world. How does this theme of earthly vs. eternal home play out in the novel?

Faith Focus: What does “home” mean to you personally, both in the worldly sense and in the spiritual sense?

Brigit hides her brokenness behind scorn, while Reidar buries his love under duty and ambition. How do their struggles reflect common human ways of coping with pain?

Faith Focus: Can you think of a time when surrendering your brokenness to God brought healing or growth?

How does God use Reidar’s “flaw”—his love for Brigit—as the very means of bringing about His greater plan?

Faith Focus: How has God used your own weakness or shame to bring about good in your life, or in someone else’s?

Brigit knows almost from the beginning that Reidar is the boy who once saved her, yet she denies it. Why was it so hard for her to admit this to herself, and what does that reveal about her inner conflict?

Faith Focus: In what ways do Brigit’s mistrust and Reidar’s suppression of love mirror the ways we sometimes resist God’s work in our lives?

Brigit fears that Christ no longer loves her, yet she clings to Him regardless. How does her faith contrast with Reidar’s ultimate disenchantment with Norse gods?

Faith Focus: What does her perseverance teach us about holding on to faith when circumstances suggest otherwise, especially in seasons of doubt or suffering?

Brigit becomes the instrument of Reidar’s conversion, even though she sees herself as weak and broken.

Faith Focus: How does this reflect God’s pattern throughout Scripture of using “unlikely” people? Have you ever witnessed or experienced someone’s faith drawing another person to Christ in an unexpected way?

Reidar’s story is loosely inspired by the historical figure, Håkon the Good. How does this historical connection deepen your understanding of the novel’s message?

Faith Focus: Reidar’s story echoes how God raises leaders to accomplish His purposes. How does this reminder encourage you to trust that God is guiding history—and your own life’s story—toward His greater plan?

Brigit’s reliance on God might recall a biblical figure, Esther. What similarities do you see between Brigit’s faith and Esther’s? What differences?

Faith Focus: Esther trusted God’s plan even in danger and uncertainty. How can Brigit’s example encourage you to rely on God’s strength when you face fear or hardship?

Both Reidar and Brigit wrestle with bitterness and vengeance. How does the novel explore the difference between human justice and God’s redemption?

Faith Focus: What does Scripture teach us about leaving vengeance in God’s hands, and how might this truth reshape the way you approach forgiveness?

Where do you see moments of transformation in Brigit and Reidar, and what turning points made them possible?

Faith Focus: How has God worked in your life to bring transformation through trials or turning points?

Astrid’s jealousy and obsession with Reidar lead to actions that will haunt her forever, yet they still play a role in God’s greater plan. How does the novel show that God can work all things for good for those who believe?

Faith Focus: Have you ever struggled with envy, obsession, or selfish desires, only to see God redeem the situation for good? How does that experience encourage you to trust Him with your heart and impulses?

Vargr’s pursuit of evil leads to his ultimate downfall. How do his choices highlight the contrast between following one’s own desires and God’s plan for Reidar and Brigit?

Faith Focus: Are there areas in your life that pull you away from God’s will? How can you surrender those and seek His guidance instead?

Through her unconditional love for Reidar, Gyda grows to feel compassion for Brigit and sees her as another human being and not a foreign “sorceress.” How does her love, shaped by loyalty to Reidar, open her heart to accept and care for Brigit?

Faith Focus: How can loving others as God calls us—seeing them through His eyes or through the love He has for them—change your heart and open you to His work in your life?

In old Norse society, lust, polygamy, and infidelity were woven into daily life and even religious practice. How does the novel demonstrate the emotional and spiritual consequences of these norms?

Faith Focus: How does God’s design for sexual purity and covenantal love provide protection and blessing in relationships today?

Viking sagas and mythology often celebrated blood feuds, vengeance, and cruelty. How does the novel show the human cost of living by such a system?

Faith Focus: How does Christ’s call to love, mercy, and forgiveness challenge you to respond differently than the world’s instinct for revenge or self-interest?

Slavery and societal hierarchies were deeply entrenched in pre-Christian societies. How does Reidar’s response to this system reveal its ultimate corruption?

Faith Focus: How does Scripture teach us to value every human being as made in God’s image, and how can this truth shape your daily choices and attitudes toward others?

Fatalism—the belief that one’s life is controlled by fate—was common in Norse culture. How do Reidar, Brigit, and Astrid wrestle with the tension between fate and free will in the story?

Faith Focus: How does trusting God’s sovereign plan differ from fatalism, and how can faith empower you to make choices that honor Him?

Reidar’s journey before finding Christ can feel heavy and depressing. How do his struggles make his eventual conversion more powerful and meaningful?

Faith Focus: How does understanding the depth of our own brokenness help you experience God’s grace and redemption more fully in your life?

Christianity’s radical call to mercy, compassion, and love for others was revolutionary against the backdrop of old Norse society. How does the story illustrate the contrast between man-made customs and the Gospel?

Faith Focus: In what areas of your life is God calling you to live counterculturally—showing mercy, love, and patience where the world would seek selfish gain or revenge?
