Doo Lough or Doolough (Black Lake) Pass in County Mayo is so stunning and peaceful, it’s painful to think such beauty bore witness to extreme suffering. The Doolough Tragedy of 1849 took place during the Great Irish Famine when starving people were forced to walk twenty miles in terrible weather. The reason for this death march? An inspection by "poor law" officials to determine eligibility for famine relief. It is estimated that more than 400 people died at Doo Lough on the journey.
